Clinical trials: Parents’ experiences

Overview

In this section you can find out about parents’ experiences of their children taking part in a clinical trial, by listening to people share their personal stories on film. Our researchers travelled all around the UK to talk to 29 people in their own homes. Find out what people said about issues such as reasons for taking part, what information parents needed, and what was involved. We hope you find the information helpful and reassuring.

Dr William van’t Hoff: Well clinical research for children is terribly important in order for us to improve the treatment of children, both in terms of making the diagnosis correctly, but especially in terms of the treatments available.

Gary: Briefly explained what it was about and that was it really, there was nothing invasive about it. It's was just, you know, half an hour out at a time towards something, towards, you know, this report that they were putting together.

Charmaine: We was in overnight for these tests and that, and she had a blood test, a x ray of the bone age and a scan of the whole body.

Josie: I would say make sure they understand everything very well and that their child understands and is happy about it.
